Kampung Naga||Maintaining Ancestral Heritage in The Era of Modernization


When traveling to West Java, especially Tasikmalaya, visitors will be able to find a unique tourist location. This location is in the form of a traditional village. This famous village for its local wisdom is called Kampung Naga. Do not imagine in this village there will be a large dragon statue as a symbol of the village. Precisely in this village there is absolutely no icon that symbolizes the dragon. Kampung Naga still retains the local wisdom and culture that they have preserved since the time of their ancestors. Kampung Naga Tourism is located in Neglasari Village, Salawu District, Tasikmalaya Regency.. In this place, you will not find luxury hotels with complete facilities.

This village is actually not a tourist village, because residents do not want their lives to be disturbed by the noise of tourism. But tourists already like to visit this village. Previously Kampung Naga was closed to outsiders, because they did not want their lives to be influenced by outside lifestyle. This village is still sustainable, the people hold the traditions of their ancestors. They refused outside intervention in interfering and damaging the sustainability of their village. They even refused electricity. There is no electricity in this village.

The uniqueness of Kampung Naga

1. Village under the hill

Some say if the word dragon as the name of the dragon village, comes from the location of the village which is on the cliff. In Sundanese it is called “gawir”. From there, the people called this village by the name of Nagawir Village. Kampung Ngawir means cliff village. Eventually, because it said that Nagawir was relatively difficult, the name was pronounced as Kampung Naga.

Dragon village area offers a natural atmosphere and full of calm. Plus, the majority of residents in this village earn a living as farmers. So that a vast expanse of green rice fields will welcome visitors when coming to this place.

2. There is no electricity network

One of the striking things about Kampung Naga is the absence of electricity. A dim atmosphere of the night was common here. The condition of the village without electricity was indeed the choice of the local community. This they do as a way to preserve the traditions of their ancestors.

Not only electricity, people in Kampung Naga are also reluctant to use LPG gas cylinders as a means for cooking. The reason is because it can have a bad effect on the environment. Especially with regard to residents’ houses that have traditional designs and are made of flammable materials.

3. Sustainable villages

Kampung Naga is indeed a village that still maintains traditional ancestral values. In every behavior they do, the people of Kampung Naga always pay attention to their impact.

Real proof of this is the existence of forests that have been saved by local residents. The forest was saved not because of mystical reasons, but as a means of preserving the natural preservation of Kampung Naga.

4. Unique traditional home design

Residents’ houses in Kampung Naga are traditional houses made of materials, such as wood, bamboo, and roofs from palm leaves or palm fibers. When you enter a resident’s house, you will not find a chair, table, bed, or other furniture.

Livestock pens and bathrooms must also be outside the residential area. In addition, the house is only allowed to face north and south. No wonder that in terms of village planning, this place has a neater design compared to the rows of houses in other places.

5. Number of buildings that remain

In this village, you will only find 103 buildings. This is indeed a separate rule there. The number of buildings consists of 100 residential buildings as well as, 3 buildings for public facilities, such as; meeting hall, rice barn, and mosque.

How, interested in the uniqueness, tradition, especially the panorama ?. The existence of Kampung Naga seems to be an oasis in the midst of modernization. Here, you will feel a calm atmosphere and rich in local wisdom. Nevertheless, every citizen in Kampung Naga is always open and happy to welcome guests and tourists alike.
